Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun Meets with Syrian Minister of Information

On September 21, 2009, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun met with a visiting delegation headed by Syrian Minister of Information Mohsen Bilal. Zhang expressed welcome for Mohsen Bilal's visit to China on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. He hailed the long-standing friendship between China and Syria, adding that Syria was among the first Arab countries to establish diplomatic relations with China. Since the establishment of China-Syria diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have been developing soundly with fruitful cooperation in all areas. Both sides have always shown mutual understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core and major interests. China highly appreciates Syria's adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China on issues related to Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang. China firmly supports Syria's just cause of safeguarding state sovereignty and territorial integrity, supports the struggle of the Palestinian people and supports the efforts of Arab countries including Syria to promote the Middle East peace process. Zhang said in recent years, the exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in the field of information have been increasing, playing a positive role in building mutual understanding, pushing forward bilateral ties and consolidating the traditional friendship. China is ready to work with Syria to advance information cooperation and exchanges between the two countries. Zhang at request also expounded China's position and proposition on the Golan Heights, the Israeli-Palestinian issue and other matters.

Mohsen Bilal said the Syria-China friendship is deeply rooted in the hearts of both peoples and Syria thanks for China's long-standing support to its just cause of safeguarding state sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Syrian side spoke highly of China's efforts in and contributions to pushing forward the Middle East peace process and safeguarding interests of developing countries. He hoped that the media of the two countries will enhance contacts and cooperation and play a greater role in deepening mutual understanding and friendship between both peoples.
